About Dr. Yvette

  • What’s your current role or area of work?

    •  Health Equity Advocate and an Author

  • Who is someone you admire?

    • My grandmother. She was full of life and always up for an adventure. She was loving, open-minded, and never afraid to try something new—even piercing her ears for the first time in her 80s. That takes real courage and a true spirit of adventure. I carry her legacy proudly.

  • What’s one book, film or podcast that has shaped your perspective?

    • The Alchemist—Paulo Coelho

  • What inspired you to be part of TEDxKU?

    • TEDxKU is a platform that celebrates diverse perspectives and creates space for inclusive dialogue. I want to be part of TEDxKU because I believe in the power of sharing ideas from all voices and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome to contribute.

  • How do you hope people feel after hearing your talk?

    • I want the audience to feel that being human is enough—that we can set aside the superhuman heroics and create a new image of the cancer survivor, one that values vulnerability as real courage. By embracing vulnerability, we highlight the importance of mental health and create a more compassionate and supportive environment for healing. If people walk away with a deeper understanding and respect for that kind of everyday bravery, I’ll feel like I’ve communicated my message well.
